2016 challenge - "Stronghold℠"
tHE GAME pIECES
Stronghold℠ is played using special FIRST balls. The boulders are 10 inches in diameter and are made of foam. Each boulder has the FIRST® logo printed on it. Each match begins with eighteen boulders in the arena; 6 in the Midline, 3 in each Castle, and 3 per alliance. Robots may start with one boulder each.
SCORING ON DEFENSES
Throughout the game, robots must weaken the defenses of the enemy alliance by driving over them. The Low Bar remains on the field during all matches, defenses in the middle position on the field change according to audience selection, and the remaining defenses are chosen by competing teams. During the autonomous period, robots can earn 2 points for reaching the outerworks and 10 points for crossing defenses. During the teleop period, crossing a defense earns 5 points. If a defense is crossed twice, it is considered damaged. By the end of the match, if any 4 of the 5 enemy defenses are damaged, the alliance receives points.
Stronghold℠ is played by two competing alliances on a flat, 27 x 54 foot field. Each alliance consists of three robots, which commands one tower, five defenses,
and a ‘secret passage’ which allows their robots to restock on ammunition, called boulders. Teams begin in the neutral zone and defenses are placed in the outerworks. During a two minute and thirty second match, teams must weaken the opposing defenses and score boulders in the enemy tower. At the end of the match, each alliance must capture the enemy tower.
The robots on each alliance attempt to score as many boulders into the opposing tower.
During the last 20 seconds of the teleop period, robots can extended to reach a rung, scale the tower, and earn 15 points.
The match begins with a fifteen second Autonomous Period in which robots operate independently of driver inputs. The robots use pre-programmed instructions to try to score as many points as possible. More points are earned during this period, rather than during the Teleoperated period.
Once the 15 seconds are up a Teleoperated Period starts. At this time, drivers take control of the robots and attempt to maximize their alliance score by scoring boulders, weakening defenses, or by defending their tower. The Teleoperated Period lasts 2 minutes and 15 seconds, and ends with robots attempting to surround and scale the tower. Once the time is up, all robots are disconnected from the controllers and the score is calculated. The winning alliance is the team with the most points at the end of the game.
